Darwen’s John Donaldson has travelled a long Rock & Roll road via numerous bands and incarnations, now living in Spain and operating as JD Meatyard
Levellers (name nicked by crusties) -> Levellers 5 (name also nicked by crusties) -> Calvin Party – all firm Peel favourites, notching up several sessions.
The first Eli Records JD release was Calvin Party’s Songs of Loss and Gain – 8 songs across 2 CDs with characteristic purpose cut linoblock for the covers. 6 gentler songs sandwiched with two blisteringly raw early cellar recordings. (First issue sold out but a repress possible.)
8 Days, recorded in a studio with the aid of a producer has a brilliant driving title track with brilliantly thunderous drums and bass and Dave Thom’s shimmering guitar. The stunning cover depicting a stark industrial coastal landscape with a fiery sunset, is created with two woodblocks, which span the front and back cover. Listen to it here
